We are known for our expertise in automation, but we do more than design and build production machines and assembly lines. When a customer comes with an important issue, we are open to an intensive collaboration that leads to the desired result. In this way, we were able to support SEE, formerly Sealed Air, during their optimisation project, where we were able to offer a solution with some simple but effective hand tools.
About SEE
SEE is a world leader in food safety, hygiene and product protection. They provide high-quality sustainable packaging solutions, thereby reducing transport costs and CO2 emissions. The Nijmegen office is part of the European Product Care division, including sales, technical support, customer service and supply chain. Nijmegen also acts as a production location and distribution hub for packaging systems and materials within the EMEA region.
Increased absenteeism
SEE had a major issue as the organisation was facing high absenteeism. This was all due to inefficiencies within the production process. At SEE, films are extruded which are wound onto cardboard cores. These cardboard cores are first pushed onto a winding shaft. They are then secured by inflating integrated bellows through a valve in the winding shaft. This is a manual process in which operators are key. They had to hold the shaft while inflating and apply considerable force to a valve with a blow gun. Unfortunately, this process often led to shoulder problems and SEE was keen to remedy this.
Simple and effective solution
To remove the burden on operators’ shoulders, a process improvement was needed. We took up this challenge at Manders Automation. We designed new tools so that the operator needs not two, but only one hand to operate them. The tool clamps itself onto the shaft and simultaneously puts compressed air on the valve. This way, the operator no longer needs to exert force on the spindle and the pressure on the shoulders is reduced.
Comfortable working environment
The introduction of the new tools has significantly reduced sick leave within SEE and secured the production process. This allows the organisation to continue to meet the high demand, but more importantly, the operators are now very satisfied with their pleasant and safe working environment.
